Hopefully, Amanoja9 is here to stay

Amanoja9 aka 天野じゃく (Amano Jyaku) is the pen-name for a mangaka that illustrates for the Amania9s/A-mania9’s circle in Japan.

Social Media: pixiv, Twitter.

Normally when you look at an illustrator or a fetish in general, you start to research and find out that there are one or two creators, at most a handful, that are actually prime examples representing a genre. Amanoja9 is one of the pioneers of transsexualism in artform. Now obviously, he’s no Eric Stanton, John Howard or Bill Ward but for the Japanese communities, there have been very few before or after him.

Sidenote: Read more about other groundbreaking Transsexual Illustrators.

A large amount of Amanoja9’s work is tied to eroticism related to real-life situations… or is it the eroticism of exhibition? Furthermore, in the past there have been individuals engaging in bareback sex, just for the rush of developing or spreading dangerous venereal diseases (see Intentional STD Spreader, Bugchasing). Some of those themes are what Amanoja9 explores.

An example at one recurring theme is: taking the reader and going through the process of discovering shemales, newhalfs… the whole transsexual umbrella of terms for these women, finding out about them, having fun with them at a brothel, and then transforming into a transsexual themselves– turning the reader into his fantasy and anticipating their reactions. These are usually the main characters in Amanoja9’s works besides the newhalf characters. So it’s sort of breaking the 4th wall, but it’s not. Either way, it’s a pretty unique storytelling method using the comic format.

With that being said, The Amanoja9 has also illustrated some pretty vanilla work under the pen-name Amano Jyaku where the audience is not the primary character. The genres under this pseudonym are relatively tame, no surgical procedures, no transsexuals, no STD spreading. An identity crisis may also exist between these pen-names. There are some points in time where the Amanoja9 simply disappeared and Amano Jyaku was prominent. Some examples: A break from 2014 up until Comiket 90 in August 2016, a 2 year drop-off. The previous drop-off was from 2010-2013 with the release of T.S. I LOVE YOU… (5.5) which was mostly a compilation/reprint of T.S. I LOVE YOU… (5).

In closing, even though his work release may be a bit erratic Amanoja9’s a pioneer, a granddaddy of the transsexual genre. Simply put, give respect where respect is due.

If you are able to do so, visit him (yes him) in person at a doujinshi event in Japan and say hello! Otherwise, look to support Amanoja9 by purchasing the official English translation of T.S. I LOVE YOU… (1) published by FAKKU. Coming Soon (see https://twitter.com/FAKKU/status/847168744078008320).
